Getting
Started
To begin, you will need a playground management committee. This is a group of people who will work together with the common purpose of developing a playground area for the community. Each member of the committee will have to become familiar with Kerry County Council’s Play Policy ‘Developing Play in Kerry’.
The aim of Kerry County Council’s Play Policy is:
‘to promote the provision of age appropriate, accessible, safe play opportunities for the young people of Kerry with the help and necessary funding from supporting agencies and the public’
This Policy was developed to provide a more planned and co-ordinated approach to play provision in Kerry. It outlines the roles and responsibilities of Kerry County Council and the community in the design, development and management of outdoor, public playground areas. Kerry County Council has also produced a special guideline booklet called ‘Ag Spraoi (at play)’. The booklet outlines eight basic steps and attempts to answer questions that may arise during the development of a playground area. Remember, the steps don’t necessarily have to be followed as presented in the booklet; for example, at site selection stage i.e. step one, a view should also be obtained from the Planning Authority, on principle, of developing the site for a playground; even though ‘Applying for Planning Permission’ is presented in step six.
